REVIEW - FROM THE ILLINOIS ENTERTAINER "SPINS" COLUMN, JULY 2005:

Guitarist Fareed Haque is a supremely talented musician who is able to straddle the worlds of classical tradition and jazz improvisation like few in recent memory. He has been the guitarist of choice for artists like Medeski, Martin, and Wood, Sting, and Joe Zawinul and has also performed all the major guitar concertos, transcribed baroque and South American music, and had modern classical works dedicated to him. His latest release with his own band, "Cosmic Hug", continues on his established multi-cultural path and is an interesting mix of world, jazz, and jam sounds played by an equally diverse band featuring a tabla player and a DJ. Fareed and his band percolate through the 11 tracks presented here, combining lighter moments with deep trancy grooves.

Some of the records' most memorable moments are the numbers that feature a strong Indian influence, like the opening cut "Gulab Jammin" and the title track. Haque plays a sitar on these, which is unusual enough, but it is the combination of the old school sitar and tabla with modern electronic elements that brings the music to life. The sound is not Deadhead jamming, pure jazz, or smooth, but something newer that is harder to describe. Call it New World, for lack of a better term. Whatever the handle, Haque and co. lay down a sound that calls for thinking AND dancing, which are two things the world can always use more of.
